New Season, New Sound – An Interview with Little Green Cars

Irish indie rock band, Little Green Cars will perform live on Thursday August 25 at 10pm in McGettigan’s AUH and on Friday August 26 as part of the ‘New Season, New Sound’ campaign at McGettigan’s JLT from 9.30pm.

Littel Green CarsFormed in Dublin in 2008, the five-piece band consists of members Stevie Appleby on guitar and vocals, Faye O’Rourke on vocals, Adam O’Regan on guitar, Donagh Seaver O’Leary on bass and Dylan Lynch on drums.

We caught up with Little Green Cars guitarist, Adam O’Regan to talk new music and life on the road ahead of their McGettigan’s performances.

McGettigan’s: Your latest album, Ephemera is the name of a WB Yeats poem. Are you guys a big fan of poetry?
Adam: Yeah, literature in general is a big influence on the band and when we were trying to come up with the artwork for the album, Stevie found this poem and he thought it reflected the sentiment of the music.

McGettigan’s: You’ve been friends since you were kids at school. What was the band like back then?
Adam: Myself and Stevie were kind of the misfits that didn’t really fit in and once we found our music, we kind of neglected everything else and school went on the back-burner.

McGettigan’s: What’s it like playing home gigs in Ireland versus overseas?
Adam: You know, playing to your home crowd there’s a different kind of nerve – it’s your family and your people but it’s a brilliant feeling.

McGettigan’s: What can we expect from your gigs with McGettigan’s in Dubai and Abu Dhabi?
Adam: We’ve no idea what to expect actually as we’ve never been to the UAE so we are kind of just going to see what it’s like when we get there.

McGettigan’s: You’ve played festivals like Coachella and appeared on Jimmy Fallon in the USA and have been touring all across the world. How important is it that you are known outside of Ireland?
Adam: No matter where we play we put all our energy into our music. Just having the opportunity to have people hear our music is the goal. It doesn’t matter so much where we play, just that we have the chance to.

McGettigan’s: What do you love about being Irish and playing to an Irish crowd?
Adam: The sense of humour, it keeps you grounded.

McGettigan’s: What are you currently working on?
Adam: We are writing new music right now – we want to get the third album out as soon as possible. It’s too early to tell the direction of the album but we have some great songs.

McGettigan’s: What’s the highlight of touring with your mates?
Adam: Touring is the best university of life and getting to travel around the world together – none of us would trade that in.

The Parlotones are coming! Here’s an exclusive interview with Paul Hodgson…

South African rock sensation The Parlotones will be performing live on The Baggot stage on Thursday June 2nd at 9.30pm at McGettigan’s Jumeirah Lake Towers in the Bonnington Hotel.

Paul Hodgson from the South African band, talked to us about the group’s love of the Irish, reality shows and super pranks ahead of their McGettigan’s gig.

Parlotones at McGettigan's JLT

The group originally formed back in 1998 as a band called, Crayon. Playing a mix of indie, rock and pop music, the group were influenced by British bands like The Cure, The Smiths, Muse, Coldplay and Radiohead. After a few years experimenting with various sounds, the four-piece changed their name to The Parlotones and are known for their melodic rock sound.

The Parlotones have recorded six studio albums and toured across South Africa, Europe, Canada, South America and the USA and have performed with bands like Coldplay and Snow Patrol. The band will be performing all of the classics from their 6 studio albums ‘Episoda’ (2003), radiocontrolledrobot (2005), A World Next Door to Yours (2007), Stardust Galaxies (2009), Journey Through the Shadows (2012) and Stand Like Giants (2013).

The band will be followed by a live DJ set from ‘Step On’ who will take over the decks until late.

McGettigan’s: Lead singer Khan is a judge on The Voice. What do you think of his judging skills?

Paul Hodgson: The finals are coming up now on Sunday. We actually went to watch one of the live recordings of the show. I think he’s one of the better judges, he’s very well-spoken and of course it’s quite an intense thing, because you are critiquing someone.

McG’s: The contestants are obviously trying to catch a break. Does this take the band back to the early days of trying to get noticed?

PH: Yeah I mean when we started, we would just take what we could get. We’d play for free. You slowly build up fans and you have time to get used to the experience. However, on these reality shows, some of it is quite fake because you have a band playing for you, you have a stylist and an audience and it’s all awesome. However, once the show is over, then you are in the real world were you have to go hustle again and get a start. I like the old school way of getting together and playing for years. Look at any successful band and they didn’t just win a TV show.

McG’s: You are performing at McGettigan’s JLT. What do you love about the Irish?

PH: I love that they like drinking.

McG’s: You are South African, are there any similarities to Irish?

PH: We are really friendly and we love food and being outside and so it’s quite similar to the Irish people. Our first ever international tour was to Ireland.

McG’s: What can we expect from the gig?

PH: We are going to play some old songs as well as new ones.

McG’s: Do you have a favourite song to play?

PH: I’d say Push Me to the Floor is probably our most popular song. We play it every show for the past decade and it’s a great sing-along song.

McG’s: You’ve won quite a few awards. Is success winning trophies or having a great fan base?

PH: In the beginning you are quite attentive to radio charts etc but eventually it doesn’t matter where you are on the charts as long as you have people coming to your shows.

McG’s: What did you want to be as a kid?

PH: I wanted to be a stuntman when I was a kid or a fireman. Boys always want to be in the army or something like that.

McG’s: So being a rock star isn’t too bad. Do you lead a rock n’ roll lifestyle?

PH: Well we are all married and have kids so we are better behaved than we used to be.

McG’s: Have you ever pulled a prank on each other?

PH: Actually the last time we were in Dubai, you know how in the airport they raffle off those sports cars, like a Ferrari. Well, our drummer entered one of those and so when he got back to South Africa, we got a radio station there to do a prank, and call him and tell him that he won the car. He was so excited that he won.
